How to Check If Your Business Appears in ChatGPT (Free Method)
By Amit · 27 July 2026 · 6 min read
To find out whether your business appears in ChatGPT, open a logged-out or temporary chat, ask the kind of question a customer would ask — "best CA firm in Pune for startups", not "tell me about my company" — and see which businesses get named. Repeat it with five or six different phrasings, and separately ask ChatGPT directly about your business name to see whether it knows anything accurate about you. This takes about twenty minutes, costs nothing, and gives you a far more honest picture than any rank tracker.
How do I test whether my business appears in ChatGPT the right way?
The most common mistake owners make is asking ChatGPT "do you know EXVOQ?" and treating the answer as the result. That tests recognition, not visibility. Nobody searching for a supplier types your name — they describe a problem.
So run the test in two parts. First, the discovery test: ask questions the way a stranger would, with no mention of your brand. Second, the recognition test: ask about your business by name and check whether what comes back is correct.
Two setup details matter. Use a temporary chat or log out, because ChatGPT can carry context from your earlier conversations and quietly flatter you with your own brand. And run the same question two or three times — answers vary between runs, so a single result tells you very little.
What questions should I actually ask?
Write down ten questions before you start. Mix these shapes:
- Category plus city — "best interior designers in Jaipur for small offices".
- Problem-first — "my GST filing keeps getting delayed, who can help".
- Comparison — "compare the top payroll software options for a 20-person company in India".
- Shortlist — "give me five vendors I should get quotes from for commercial solar in Nashik".
- Qualifier-heavy — the way real buyers talk: budget, timeline, industry, language.
Keep a simple sheet with three columns: the question, whether you were named, and who was named instead. That third column is the valuable one. If the same three competitors keep appearing, you now know exactly who owns the answer space in your category.
Should I check Perplexity and Gemini too?
Yes, and it takes only a few extra minutes because you already have the question list. Each assistant retrieves and weighs sources differently, so it is normal to be invisible in one and cited in another. Perplexity shows its sources openly, which makes it the most useful of the three for diagnosis — you can see the exact pages it pulled from and judge why those pages won.
Google AI Overviews is worth a look as well. Type your questions into Google and read the answer box above the blue links. If your competitor is quoted there and you are not, that is the same problem in a different window. We covered how each engine picks its sources in this breakdown of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
What does it mean if ChatGPT has never heard of my business?
It usually means one of four things, and none of them are about your product being bad.
- AI crawlers cannot read your site. Many hosts and CDNs block GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot by default. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for Disallow rules against those names.
- Your pages do not answer questions. A homepage full of taglines gives an assistant nothing to quote. Pages that state a plain answer near the top get pulled into answers far more often.
- You exist in very few places. Assistants cross-check. If your business appears only on your own website and nowhere else — no directory listing, no Google Business Profile, no industry site, no reviews — there is nothing to corroborate.
- Your details do not match across the web. Different addresses, phone numbers or business names on different listings make you look like several weak entities rather than one clear one.
The good news is that all four are structural and fixable, which is more than can be said for most marketing problems. This post goes deeper into why well-ranking sites still get zero AI citations.
How do I keep track of this month after month?
Search Console will not help you here — AI citations do not appear in it. So build the cheapest possible tracker: the same ten questions, run on the same date each month, across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, logged in a spreadsheet.
Score it simply. One point if you are named, half a point if you are named without a link, zero if you are absent. Add the points up and watch one number over time. It is rough, but a number that moves from 2 to 7 over four months tells you something real, and it is repeatable by anyone in your team in half an hour.
What should I fix first if I am not showing up?
Work in this order, because the early items block everything after them. Unblock AI crawlers in robots.txt. Add basic schema markup so machines can read who you are and what you sell. Rewrite your top three pages so each opens with a direct answer instead of an introduction. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile. Then get listed on two or three credible industry directories your competitors already appear on.
None of this is quick-win trickery — it is the same work that makes a site easy for a human to read and easy for a machine to parse. Do the first three and re-run your ten questions a month later.
FAQ
Why do I get a different answer every time I ask ChatGPT the same question?
These systems are probabilistic, and when they search the live web the results themselves change. That is exactly why you should run each question a few times and record how often you appear, rather than trusting one run.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
You cannot buy your way into an organic recommendation. Visibility comes from being readable, being mentioned in enough credible places, and having content that answers the question directly.
How long before changes show up in AI answers?
Slower than a Google ranking change and hard to predict, because some answers come from live retrieval and some from what the model already absorbed. Treat it as a quarter-by-quarter effort, not a weekly one.
If you would rather not run the checks by hand, EXVOQ's free instant audit tests crawler access, structured data and answer-first content for any website in about 15 seconds. Try it on your own site.
